Clean 98SE
Install |
Windows 98 Second Edition has the DOS setup disabled by default, so you can not do a clean install from a newly formatted hard drive. To get around this, follow these steps:
- Start your computer using a Windows 98 boot disk with
CD-Rom support
- At the command prompt, type 'A:\Fdisk' to create a
new hard drive partition
- Copy the Windows 98SE install files from the CD-Rom
to the new partition
- . Install Windows 98 original build friom the CD-Rom
- . Run the Windows 98SE setup and create a boot disk when
prompted
- Reboot to DOS using the Windows 98SE boot disk
- At the command prompt type 'A:\Format /S' to reformat
the "C:" partition and then copy the system files to
the "C:" directory
- . Remove the boot disk and boot back to DOS
- Run the DOS based Setup from the
"D:" partition

- Right click My computer
- select properties
- select Performance
- select graphics
- set Hardware Acceleration to maximum using slider
- reboot the computer

Install a PC speaker driver for the computer without a
soundcard
- Get the Microsoft PC Speaker driver from
ftp://microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/speak.exe
- START --> Settings --> Control Panel -->Add New
Hardware -> No (If asked to search for new hardware)
-->Sound ,Video,Game controllers --> Have Disk
-->Locate the file 'Speak.exe' --> Install

Rename The Recycle Bin

To add the "Rename" option to the Recycle Bin when right-clicking on it,

Windows 98 Restore

We can restore Windows operating system by using the 'PCRESTOR.bat' file . It is available in the '\Tools\Sysrec' sub-folder of Windows 98 CD-Rom.

Go to File Manager ('C:\Windows\Winfile.exe')

Double-click on 'Pcrestor.bat'.

This will create 'C:\Restor' folder contains 'Msbatch.inf'
